Soul Eater
~Black Blood~
Part 2
* * *
The next few days, Soul remained in bed. He was able to walk around the room but he couldn’t leave because the wound on his back still needed more time to heal, that and he was refusing to leave.
He did not want to have to go out there, face Maka and then eventually go through this AGAIN. The Demon was furious with him and kept trying to convince Soul that he couldn’t stay in the Dispensary forever. Akiko was unknowingly agreeing with him and tried to get Soul to go outside for fresh air.
After a while, it finally started to get to him. Soul was starting to worry about what was going on. No one was visiting him and the responsibility of being a weapon was rearing its ugly head to him. He knew Maka was pretty tough but she couldn’t fight a Pre-Kishin on her own. Soul tried but couldn’t stop thinking about how she was doing.
He wanted to ask but the only who on duty when he was awake was the worrying Akiko. Soul couldn’t ask her because he knew she likes to keep people informed. Like when everyone visited, Maka probably didn’t want Soul to know that she was constantly visiting but Akiko told him. He wanted to ask someone he’s trusts more, someone like Nygus, who never seems to be around when he really wants her to!
Finally, Nygus came in while Akiko was taking Soul’s dishes from lunch. Nygus saw Soul was awake and walked over to him as Akiko walked away with the dishes.
“Hello, Soul,” Nygus greeted, “how are you feeling?”
“I’m good,” Soul answered. He made sure Akiko wasn’t listening then he leaned toward Nygus and whispered, “Hey, Nygus-sensei, can I ask you something?”
Nygus leaned toward him, seeing as how Soul wanted to ask only her something, “Yes?”
“Have you seen Maka around, lately?” Soul felt a little embarrassed asking this, “I was just wondering if she was okay.”
Nygus smiled underneath her mask and understood how Soul was feeling with her being a weapon as well, “Maka is doing well. She still pays attention in her studies but I hear her appetite has lowered a little and she’s become a bit distant. Don’t worry, though, she should be fine if she’s with her friends.”
Soul relaxed a little and he sat back, “Thanks, Nygus-sensei.”
“It’s my job,” Nygus continued to smile and Soul slowly smiled back. Nygus then glanced at the clipboard in her hands and looked back up at Soul, “well, that wound of yours was pretty deep. However, it should heal with a little more time. You can still walk around outside, if you want. Just make sure it’s not too far or too long.”
Soul knew Nygus was really suggesting that he’d go and see Maka but Soul made himself comfortable on the bed and replied, “I think about it.”
Nygus’s smile softened a bit but she nodded and left Soul to rest.

Finally, after another few days, Soul was out of the Dispensary and back home. The party wasn’t ready on the day on Soul’s return but Kid promised it would the next day. So, that night Soul and Maka decided to go for a short walk through Death City.
Soul and Maka quietly walked through the cobblestone streets with nothing said. Soul had his hands in his jacket pockets and looked at the buildings they past. Maka swung her hands behind her back and happily stared off into space. Nothing needed to be said, they were just happy that the nervousness was over and they can relax. They turned to an alley when Maka suddenly stopped.
Soul looked over at her and saw her wide eyes.
“Maka, what’s wrong?” Soul asked but his question was answered with an inhuman screech in the background. They both looked farther down the dark alley at the source. A Pre-Kishin.
Maka looked ready to lead Soul out of there but he stood his ground and held out a hand to her.
“Maka, let’s go!” he said and his eyes flashed. Maka hesitated.
“But, Soul, your wound…” Maka reminded him. The Pre-Kishin started towards them.
“I’ll be fine. Hurry!” Soul yelled he transformed into a scythe but he clattered to the ground when Maka didn’t catch him.
“You’re not supposed to be in a battle!” she argued.
“You idiot, pick me up and fight him! I’ll be fine, Maka!” Soul angrily shouted.
“We have to run,” Maka picked up Soul and was going to make a break for it but the human/animal-like demon charged at her. His red eyes flashed, saliva dripped off his white teeth and his claws slashed at her.
Maka quickly spun Soul and countered it. She was locked in battle, anyways. The Pre-Kishen growled, his pointed ears twitched, and his red eyes flashed under his brown hair. In the moonlight, he had a slim figure with dark skin, brown fur covering his chest and remains of human clothes tattered and shredded. Maka was about to attack but her hand felt wet. She looked and saw blood dripping down the scythe onto her hand.
Soul’s blood. It was the counter-attack. Maka felt fear and frustration. She couldn’t continue the fight for Soul’s sake but she had to finish the fight for her sake.
Soul felt the blood dripping down his back but he tried to hang on. Maka needs to defend herself, even if I die. I am and that’s why she won’t-
He growled in annoyance.
“Soul…” the Demon called out in the doorway. Soul glanced at the Demon but he didn’t move.
The Kishin launched himself at Maka and she raised Soul. I don’t have time to wait for an opening! She screamed in her head. I have to attack now! She brought the scythe down and blood splattered on the pavement.
The Kishin screamed and its severed hand fell to the ground. Maka panted and stared at the Kishin with intense eyes. The Kishin growled but retreated. Maka looked back down at Soul.
“Soul? Soul?” she called out but there was no reply. She felt a stirring in her; a feeling was growing in her. Thoughts were moving away and she barely noticed Soul transforming back into a human. He was falling with red blood streaming from his back. He, he, red blood, Maka chuckled in her head but sense rushed back and realization slapped her.
“Soul!” she screamed.

I knew it. I knew it! Soul furiously yelled in his dream as he lay unconscious in the Dispensary. I knew I shouldn’t have left. I knew this was going to happen. Shingami damn it! I knew it! Now, I’m back in the Dispensary, my wound reopened and Maka is now worse than ever!
Soul was back in the red and black room wearing the red and black tux. He was standing in the middle of the room, enraged, and the Demon stood by the piano with a displeased look.
“Darn it!” Soul slammed his fist on the metal table and the Demon’s look didn’t waver.
“You hesitated,” the Demon disappointedly pointed out, “the black blood slowly activated in you and Maka but it was too late. You were already unconscious and that snapped her back to sanity.
“Don’t be so hesitant next time,” the Demon turned.
“I don’t think there will be a next time,” Soul replied solemnly. The Demon turned back with worry.
“Now, there’s no way you’ll die from something like this. Even if there is, the black blood-” the Demon tried to assure him.
“That’s not what I meant!” Soul yelled. The Demon was cut off in shock. Soul looked away, “I don’t mean death. I mean quitting.”
The Demon blinked in surprise. He was speech-less.
“I don’t want to have to go through this, again and again. No matter how hard I try, I can’t protect Maka. She always ends up hurt in a way I can’t fix. I can’t hurt her any longer. I might as well quit,” Soul lowered his head and didn’t plan on lifting it. The Demon could do nothing. He tried to figure out the pros and cons of the situation.
If Soul quits and becomes Meister-less, he’ll need the black blood to defend himself. However, if he leaves Maka, then the Demon will have no way to access the black blood in her and he loses his only chance to spread the black blood through others. Damn boy, the Demon thought. This is bad. Very bad.

Back at Maka and Soul’s apartment. Maka was sitting on her bed hugging her pillow and tears streaming down her face. Soul…Soul! She kept saying the name over and over in her head. Maka had locked herself in her room and Blair had tried to get to Maka but nothing worked.
What was I thinking?! She yelled in her mind. Trying to surpass Mama and Papa. What a stupid ambition. If this keeps up, Soul is going to die…for me. I’m not that special but he would throw his life away for me. A weapon’s Technician is before themselves. Unless, they don’t have a Technician. Unless, I quit.

The room has become dark again.
She holds a blue candle. He holds a red candle.
Both are ready to put out the flames and let darkness consume them.
A four-way fate.
He leaves.
She leaves.
Both leave together.
Both keep the flames lit.

Dr. Stein walked through the lower levels of Shibusen again and stopped outside of one of the metal doors. He lit a cigar and leaned against the wall by the door. He puffed a skull shape.
“Soul’s in the Dispensary again and Maka refuses to speak to anyone,” he paused and blew out smoke, “what do you plan on doing?”
There was a long silence. No answer or murmur. Stein looked down and started to leave.
“May I visit Soul?” Crona finally spoke. Stein stopped and smiled.
