Soul Eater
~Black Blood~
Part 1
* * *
Maka was sitting by a small metal black table in a black chair in a dark room. A candle on a black pole revealed the dark walls, black and red checkered floor, and dark red curtains. She was wearing a long black dress and had on black bows that held up her pig tails.
She suddenly turned and saw Soul standing in the middle of the room. He was wearing a black and red tux and was softly smiling.
“Soul?” Maka quizzically called out. He grinned.
“You mind dancing with me?” he nonchalantly asked. Maka blinked.
However, she found her and Soul slowly swaying side to side with Soul leading. She then heard jazz music that just started to play in the background. Or was it already playing? Maka wondered. She didn’t hear anything before. She glanced at Soul and realized she was spacing out as he was gazing at her. Maka looked away for a moment.
“Soul, what’s going on?” Maka asked. Soul quietly chuckled.
“It doesn’t need to make sense,” he said with a strange look in his eye.
Maka was going to ask but she was at a loss of words when she caught Soul’s gaze. She relaxed and let Soul continue to lead her. She couldn’t think anymore, thoughts were lost from her mind. Maka mindlessly danced and stared back at Soul.
“Maka…” he tilted his head and they stopped. His fingers slid across her neck to her chin. She felt breathless and couldn’t say anything. The music was gone; it was drowned out by the sound of rushing water in the background. No, it was thicker than water and it gradually grew louder. However, Maka woke up.

She was in the Dispensary by Soul’s bed. He was asleep on the hospital bed and had been in a pretty bad condition for a while. What did we do this time? Maka tried to remember then it came back to her.
They were on a mission with Black Star and Tsubaki a few days ago, or was it a week? Maka couldn’t remember but what she did recall was that it was dusk as she fought a Pre-Kishin on top of a stopped train. When the train started to move, Maka slipped and nearly fell off the train but Soul transformed back into a human from weapon form and caught her. Unfortunately, the Pre-Kishin got him from behind, attacking him in the back and they both fell off. Before they hit the ground and despite Soul’s bleeding back he still hung on to Maka and made sure he hit the ground before her so she wouldn’t get hurt by the impact.
The Pre-Kishin jumped off of the leaving train, towards them and was ready to come down on them with a killing strike. However, a chain scythe tied around the Pre-Kishin’s arm and he was pulled away in the air. He slid across the ground and looked up to see Black Star charging towards him. After a quick battle, the Pre-Kishin was killed and Soul was in a bad condition…again.
Maka looked down at Soul with sorrowful eyes. He’s always protecting me but…does he know how much it hurts me to see him like this? Maka thought.
“Maka?” a woman called out from behind her. Maka turned around to a woman in a nurse uniform with short blonde and brown hair.
“Akiko-sensei,” Maka greeted. Akiko’s shining blue eyes shone with worry with a small smile of concern.
“Maka, you’re still here? Oh, you’re going to wear yourself out like this,” Akiko walked over to Maka and helped her up out of the seat, “I know it must be hard in all this suspense but Soul is doing better.”
She started to slowly led Maka to the door, “Even so, he still needs rest. But when he wakes up, I’ll be sure to call you okay?”
Akiko had Maka at the open door and Maka looked down. She knew Akiko was right but Soul…
“Maka, why don’t you get going? I’ll keep an eye on him and tell you if anything happens, okay?” Akiko put a hand on Maka’s shoulder. Maka looked up and Akiko smiled. Maka slowly smiled back then nodded.
She left and Akiko looked over at Soul. He’s been through so much, she thought. So, many scars. The poor boy looks like he’s going to be through even more being his age.

IN the dark room a pre-love has begun?
A dance has been danced but the song has just only been introduced.
Tears have fallen with blue candles of sad.
A red voice speaks with a tongue of lust.
Does red start to light with shadows of black?

A few hours later, Maka was headed back to the Dispensary. She couldn’t bear to wait until someone called her. She had to check on Soul again. But as she reached the hall where the Dispensary was she ran in into Death the Kid.
“Maka!” he called out in surprise.
“Kid! Oh, hi,” Maka stopped in front of him, “what are you doing here?”
“Looking for you,” he answered with a laugh, “Soul’s awake and everyone else is with him. I was going to get you.”
“He’s awake?” Maka felt her spirits rise.
“Yes, let’s go,” Kid turned back to the Dispensary with Maka.

Inside, Liz, Patty, Black Star and Tsubaki were standing around Soul’s bed talking about the classes he missed. They stopped when they heard the door open and close and they happily greeted Maka when they saw her. She smiled and scampered over to a space at the end of the bed.
“Hey, Maka,” Soul greeted tiredly, “Akiko-sensei told me about how often you were visiting. You shouldn’t worry so much.”
“Yeah, sorry. I just couldn’t wait for you to wake up,” Maka smiled happily. You Baka, she thought. Why must you endanger yourself? Maka wanted to tell Soul that he’s being too protective of her in battles but she couldn’t in front of all the others. It was something only they could sort out.
Soul looked over at Black Star and Tsubaki, “Guess we own you guys for saving our butts out there.”
Black Star proudly dismissed it, “No charge. My greatness is free since its constant and people would probably pay money to see me, anyways.”
Soul weakly laughed and tried to smile but just laughing used up a lot of his energy and breath.
“What’s this?” someone walked in and everyone turned to the assistant school nurse.
“Hello, Akiko-sensei,” everyone greeted.
“Oh my, there are so many people. Be sure not to cause too much excitement. I‘m just here to check on Soul,” Liz and Patty moved from the side of the bed so Akiko could stand beside him, “now, how are you feeling?”
Soul tried to shrug, “I’m kinda tried and can’t really move. My back’s a little stiff, too.”
“Hmm,” Akiko observed Soul and saw he was close to nodding off as they spoke. She turned to everyone else and clasped her hands, “well, I think you students should get going. Soul seems to need more rest to regain his energy. How about you all can come back later and I’ll tell how he’s doing then, okay?”
Everyone agreed. Maka didn’t quite reply. She was watching Soul fall asleep again. Maka wanted to stay but she knew that Akiko wouldn’t let her and Soul wouldn’t have wanted her to anyways. She followed the others to the door and Kid saw the worried look on her face.
“Maka,” he reassuringly put a hand on her shoulder, “he’ll be okay. Soul’s pretty strong and wouldn’t want you to worry. But we’ll certainly be ready to celebrate when he gets out, alright? For now…hmm, why don’t we all go out for ice cream? My treat.”
“Yahoo! Sounds great!” Black Star cheered but he quickly lowered his voice when he realized Soul was still sleeping.
“Yum. Sounds good, huh, nee-chan?” Patty licked her lips.
“Mm-hm,” Liz agreed.
Maka smiled again and decided she would probably get a treat for Blair while she was out.

Soul was in the red and black room and was wearing the red and black tux. He was sitting at the small metal table and sighed.
“Frustrated, Soul?” the small red Demon asked from beside a black piano across the room. Soul knew the Demon could read his thoughts and decided to tell him to save the trouble besides; he needed to vent this out.
“It’s just that I’m stuck in bed and Maka’s worried about me. I try to protect her but she’s still hurt when she sees me hurt,” Soul explained and buried his face in his hands with another sigh.
“Then perhaps you could protect both you and her with a little bit more power,” the Demon suggested.
This again? Soul thought and took his face out of his hands.
“So, you know where I’m going with this,” the Demon replied.
“If I do that I might end up hurting her along with those who were going to hurt her or even those that are innocent,” Soul argued.
“But she would be okay if she joined you,” the Demon slyly answered. Soul paused for a moment, lost in the thought of it. He quickly shook it away.
“Then we probably wouldn’t be able to return to sanity,” Soul pointed out.
“And what’s wrong with that? There are no fears or useless thoughts,” the Demon replied confidently.
Maka…Soul thought about what would happen if both of them went insane. He tried to remind himself of others but he couldn’t help but think of him and Maka, them in a mindless world of their own. But-but-the others…
Soul sighed again and ran his fingers through his hair.
“Having a mental war with yourself? I know,” the Demon walked away from the piano to the center of the room with his eyes never leaving Soul, “but don’t worry. You have time to choose. However, much longer it will be until you and Maka are in another fight or tense situation, just call me.”
The room faded away and Soul continued to sleep.

THE room has become lit by orange flames of frustration.
He falls into the cradle of red and black within the orange, unsure whether to take her with him. She remains imprinted on the white wall,
Black and red waiting to be torn off and taken away, she holds a blue candle in her hand.
Shall he take her and embrace her in flames or shall she dive in to wash away the blue?

Akiko was in the room with Soul, writing her report on Soul’s condition so far when the school nurse, Nygus, walked in.
“Ah, hello, Nygus,” Akiko greeted happily.
“Hello, Akiko,” Nygus nodded in greeting and looked over at the sleeping boy, “how is Soul Eater doing?”
“He was conscious a little while ago and was still very exhausted so he fell back asleep shortly after. I suppose it was because of few of his friends came to visit when he was awake. He’s sleeping peacefully, now, and his breathing is normal but, I believe, due to a dream, his heart rate increased a bit,” Akiko thoroughly explained.
“I see. Well, let me just take his blood pressure and blood count,” Nygus approach Soul with a needle and took a small amount of blood.
Akiko glanced at the blood in the light and saw the red mixed with black. She gasped.
“H-his blood…is that black?” she stammered. Nygus had a sorrowful look in her eyes and she gazed at Soul.
“Yes, Black Blood. It was created by a Snake Witch and during battle, it invaded his bloodstream. It’s unfortunate that he ends up in so many fights. We hope this Black Blood can be stabilized through little use. However, it might not be possible since it’s activated by insanity,” Nygus looked up at Akiko with a serious look. Akiko put a hand to her mouth and worry swept over her.
“Oh, dear,” she stared at Soul with concerned eyes, “what are these effects? Do they hurt him?”
Nygus shook her head, “The black blood is strange. It’s hard to say exactly what it does but we certainly want to avoid studying the effects on Soul. So, a different way to experiment the black blood is being searched for.”
It’s best to keep others as little informed of the black blood, as possible, Nygus thought. We don’t want people to be persuaded by its effects when a good use is yet to be found.
Akiko looked back at Nygus and dropped her hands to her sides, “May I…be excused…I believe my shift is…done…”
“It’s understood. Please, go on ahead,” Nygus assured her before she left, “trust me, as a nurse, you see many things that you don’t want to see.”
Akiko nodded and left the room

In the lower levels of the school, Doctor Franken Stein stood outside of a metal door and puffed his cigar.
“I assume you’re going to stay in there a while longer?” he spoke aloud to someone.
“I want to wait until Maka visits,” an uncomfortable girl replied. Inside, was a bed in the corner and a thin girl in a black dress with short pink hair sat in the bed, hugging a pillow.
Stein puffed another skull from the smoke, “You know, she’s a teenage girl. Though an honest one, anything could happen and she might not be able to come for a while. If she weren’t able to come, what would you do?”
Stein glanced at the door and awaited the answer in the long silence.
“I think I’ll go sit in Mr. Corner,” she answered. Stein sighed.
Maka seems to be the only one who can some sense into her but I’m sure Crona will finally learn who to deal with making a decision on her own. Stein thought. He leaned against the door and puffed another skull.

After getting ice cream with the others, Maka returned to her and Soul’s apartment and gave the purple cat, Blair, a small bag of pumpkin candy treats then sat on the couch.
She raised her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. Blair saw Maka staring off into space and Blair transformed into a human girl with purple hair then ran over to Maka.
“Nya! Maka, how’s about we do some girl stuff? Maybe paint each others nails?” Blair suggested. Maka looked away then got up.
“No thanks. I’ll just go to my room,” Maka left the living room and walked into her room, closing the door behind her. She looked up at the post cards from her mother that Maka put in her wall. She felt a little assured and brushed her fingers across them.
